We’re Building Momentum in Florida
In February, the Florida legislature introduced the Florida End-of-Life Options Act (H0471).
Help bring Death with Dignity to your state! Together, we can fight to ensure that people with terminal illness can decide how and when to die on their own terms.
SIGN OUR PETITION to let us know you’re ready to bring Death with Dignity to Florida, and we’ll share the ways you can get involved in the fight locally and nationally.
Paula A: Death Walker, Death Talker, Thanatologist
Welcome to my sanctuary, a space dedicated to discussing death with grace and dignity. My journey as a Death Walker, Death Talker, and Thanatologist has been shaped by a profound spiritual and cultural consciousness, as well as an unwavering dedication to my calling. With a deep-rooted holistic background and a Thanatology degree, I am committed to changing how we see, feel, and think about the dying and death process.
I guide individuals facing terminal illness, helping them choose the time, place, and manner of their passing. My role is to walk with them, ensuring their final moments are filled with peace, dignity, swiftness, and most importantly, autonomy. I am a passionate Advocate for Euthanasia and Medical Assistance in Dying (MAID), dedicated to promoting dignity in dying. Having a plant medicine background from my mom and grams gives me this holistic vibration.
My journey into the world of death and dying began in my childhood, nurtured by my mother and grandmother. From a young age, I could sense when animals and people were nearing the end of their lives. This gift, which my family called "DeathWalking," allowed me to provide comfort and companionship to those transitioning from this world. My hands are my key instrument, channeling vibrations and images to guide me in my work.
Death was never feared in my family; it was embraced as a natural part of life. I learned to honor the cycle of life and death through everyday experiences, such as gardening. This understanding shaped my approach to death, viewing it as a brilliant and cosmic event. My heritage as a medicine woman, combined with my family's teachings, has given me a unique perspective on life and death.
I have traveled extensively to learn about different cultural practices surrounding death and dying. My experiences in Estonia, Mexico, Finland, Croatia, and other countries have shown me the harsh realities of how we treat our loved ones in their final moments, often with less compassion than we show our pets. This realization drives my mission to change how we approach death in this country. I am particularly critical of the hospice system, which I believe is flawed in many ways and lacks the quality of care that individuals deserve.
As an educator of all things death, I teach, mentor, and advocate for a better understanding of the death process. My work includes advocacy, legacy projects, death rituals, life plans, vigil sitting, organized material planning, and medicine woman death walks. I am also passionate about educating children and parents on how to talk about death, with a book in the works to help guide these conversations.
My commitment to promoting dignity in dying and challenging the fear of death that pervades our society is unwavering. Join me on this journey, building a new, kinder, gentler death community, creating new paths to embrace death as we do life, to nurture future generations instead of building fears and anxiety around death. Change the patterns and watch what happens!
Thank you.
Go grab a Gabber weekly Newspaper to see the first of an ongoing set of interviews about being a death doula and how much our community and country are going to come to rely on us. The article written by Abby was outstanding.
St. Petersburg resident and death expert Paula Adams is quick to discuss the topic of dying. She serves Pinellas County as a doula and hopes to host “death talks” in Gulfport.
Today we’d like to introduce you to Paula Adams.
Hi Paula, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to introduce yourself.
I started my death doula as a child. I didn’t know it at the time. My grams and mom were both holistic medicine women; I was dubbed the death talker and walker. My grams showed me the beauty of death; my mom talked me through each stage. Most of it started with my animals dying on the farm. Later I would like my grams and my mom, all before I was 24.
I was recently interviewed by Spectrum news with a client about what being a death doula is. We started in my home with a very nice crew who were so respectful and kind. It was quite the morning. We then carried on the interview with a fellow to my first Death Talk in Gulfport FL.
For questions or public speaking requests for customized inquiries, please send me a message. Book a Florida Death with Dignity Event. Workshops and Mentorships requests. I will get back to you soon.
